New Portland-based International Ministry Holds Debut Gathering

TIGARD — Longtime KOIN-TV newsman Mike Donahue served as master of ceremonies last month as the first annual benefit event was held for a new international ministry based in Portland. Ignite the World Ministries held the benefit dinner at the Tigard Public Library on Saturday, Feb. 6. About 120 people attended the event, which was sponsored by Standard TV and Appliance, a Portland-area business that helps support 35 charities, schools and care centers each year.

The event sought to raise operating support and funds for a Philippines outreach this month, a June outreach to Haiti and for work later this year in Cambodia and Vietnam. The ministry will provide spiritual help, trauma counseling and medical assistance. Ignite the World Ministries was founded last year by Mike Maksimowicz, former director of Portland Rescue Mission, and his wife, Jennifer.

Its mission is to provide evangelistic work, church planting and compassion relief projects to areas of the world where the gospel has not been heard or is rarely heard. It distributes solar gospel audio players where there is a low literacy rate, thus allowing the Bible to be understood. It also builds clean-water wells, provides medical and dental care, and support to orphanages.

Maksimowicz, who serves as executive director for the ministry, spoke on how it got started, its mission, and its vision to “bring hope to the peoples of the world who have no hope.” He also shared what has already been accomplished in Cambodia, including installation of three fresh water wells in jungles there, the planting of a church at “Dump Mountain” in Phnom Penh, and the leading of Buddhist Cambodians to faith in Jesus Christ through the solar units. Testimonies also were given by three of the Cambodia outreach team members.
